Robert Redford’s Misguided Passion (And Why Gas Prices Will Rise)
Robert Redford, as a political activist, is a fraud. The passion which he demonstrates with regards to his opposition to the keystone pipeline is fraught with insincerity. Building this pipeline is crucial to ensuring America has, and will have, its own oil supply now and for the future. Redford seems not to be uncomfortable with America spending billions annually on foreign oil, and what the environmental impact is on the Middle East for obtaining that oil. He also seems un-phased at the real prospect of $5 a gallon gas, which is just around the corner.
Redford seems not at all concerned that Obama makes deals with Hugo, “El Diablo” Chavez for Venezuelan oil. Redford seems not at all paralyzed when oil is drilled for in the gulf of Mexico, or anywhere in the world, as long as it is not America doing the drilling. Redford only becomes paranoid, and annoyed, when America has the audacity to drill for its own oil, on its own land. What is the rational behind that misguided sentiment? Not only do we need the keystone pipeline, we need a http://www.stopredford.org website to stop Redford from doing any more harm, any more political sabotage, to America’s oil supply.
Writes Redford:
“This U.S. Senate has to stop looking towards the past and move into the new century. If only some of these politicians showed the same level of passion for creating new markets around cleaner forms of energy, as they’re showing for crippling a sitting president with a dirty, potentially highly dangerous, old-school Canadian tar sands pipeline.”
Redford talks about “passion for creating new markets” at the same time he supports taxes and regulations which suppress that “passion”. Redford talks about “crippling a sitting president” at the same time he supports “crippling” the American car owner with higher and higher gas prices. If Redford really wants new markets searching and finding alternatives to the “dirty” oil we have now (which is not as “dirty”, or as dangerous as it once was) he would oppose what Obama is doing to the very “passion” entrepreneurs want, and want to have, to create and pave the way for “new markets”. Taxes and regulations stifle the exact “passion” Redford wants to see from entrepreneurs.
If Redford really wants us to “move into a new century” how does moving back into the stone age move us forward? How does not drilling for oil at all move us into “the new century”? How does relying on foreign oil make us more independent of foreign oil? How does spending billions of dollars on foreign oil bring down the price of gas here at home? How does preventing America from drilling for oil while condoning other countries doing it not amount to hypocrisy? How does Redford explain all this and what are Redford’s real motives in fighting the keystone pipeline? Because he is being dishonest.
Redford’s “passion” for the environment, for the wildlife and ecosystems in and around where the keystone pipeline would be built is admirable. However, we can still build the pipe and ensure the environment is protected. His fear that the water supply will be poisoned with dangerous pollutions used in drilling for the oil is unfounded. The water we drink is regulated by the government, and it is filtered and treated to ensure the least amount of harmful pollutants remain in the water when it reaches our sinks and drinking fountains – and our lips. Water is sampled continuously. If there are irregularities in the water supply, those irregularities are dealt with promptly.
“This struggle is about every parent’s fears for our children’s future. And this struggle is about every young person’s hope for their immediate future. It should be every parent’s worst nightmare that these people we sent to Washington to lead us into the future, will continue to embrace the flawed philosophical case for doing nothing.”
Not building the pipeline is “doing nothing”. Not building the pipeline will force gas prices to rise now, and in the future. Not building the pipeline is a “parent’s worst nightmare” who lives on a fixed income and must fill up their car with gas at $4.00 a gallon or higher because Robert Redford is too inept, too selfish to see we can have our keystone pipeline and protect the environment too. Our children’s future is exactly what conservatives are fighting to protect by ensuring there still will be an America in the future. Without oil, or becoming more dependent on foreign oil, at foreign oil prices, ought to be more of “every parent’s fear” for “our children’s future”. The more dependent we are on foreign oil, the more expensive that oil will be, forcing our government to spend billions of dollars more, which it will pay for either by raising taxes on us or passing that cost onto our children via the national debt. Isn’t that option our “worst nightmare”?

“This dirty, dangerous tar sands pipeline is not in the national interest. It’s that simple.”
Robert Redford is the one spreading fear without warrant. Robert Redford is the one who is “doing nothing”. This “dirty, dangerous” liberal mindset that Redford has is what “is not in the national interest”. That is what is “that simple”.
